Movie Review
The best review I've seen of this movie likened it to Gone Girl if it was made as a Lifetime movie, and honestly, that's probably the most accurate assessment out there.
It Is Not Deep
Deep Water isn't deep, but it's also not very enjoyable, and you'll be bored to tears for large parts of its long 2-hour runtime. The film moves along at such a snail's pace (pun intended) that you'll find it hard to care when things actually start to drag on for about an hour.
Part of the problem here stems from its two main characters, Vic and Melinda. Vic retired from working in a morally dubious field related to drone warfare. He goes for long bike rides, has a brooding look, and collects snails (hence the earlier pun!) And Melinda is a fun-loving wife, but she's also a master manipulator who knows exactly how to push people's buttons, especially Vic. .
Vic allows his wife to run errands to avoid a threatened divorce, spending most of his time channeling his inner Gone Girl as he watches from afar as Melinda has affairs with numerous different men. Only each of these men begins to disappear under increasingly horrific circumstances. Is Vic responsible?
Erotic Psychological Thriller
The story acts as an erotic psychological thriller, but forgets to add any thrills or erotica along the way. The few love scenes here aren't particularly steamy, but there's no mystery about it, despite trying to act like it for about 20 minutes of the film's running time. I'm not a fan of gross nudity for the sake of on-screen nudity, but I feel it at least brought the ice-cold script to life.
The Ending
The ending is also another point of contention here, and while I won't spoil it here (we'll explain a separate ending for that once it's released), the movie just ends without closing any of the plot points. While there aren't necessarily any sequels, it's almost as if the filmmakers ran out of ideas and just wanted to finish this project as quickly as possible.
Deep Water surrounds its story with a lot of half-baked ideas that end up becoming mediocrity and eventually grow to the point where it eats up the whole premise of the film, going from boring to boring to silly. There are so many plot holes, unresolved issues, and terrible character decisions that you'll be hard-pressed to care until the end credits roll.
Good Script
There will definitely be an audience for it, and Deep Water has flashes of a good movie throughout its amazing script. The problem is that these moments are drowned out by a sea of frustration with bloated work hours. It's a dull, meandering thriller that forgets to add some thrills along the way. But at least only one snail was harmed in the making of this, so there's that.
