Deep Water Movie Ending Explained, Ben Affleck, Ana De Armas New Movie

Deep Water Plot Synopsis

Deep Water is the latest psychological erotic thriller airing on Amazon Prime (UK) and Hulu (US) and tells the story of a married couple, Vic and Melinda.

Vic retired from working in the morally dubious field of drone warfare. He goes on long bike rides, has far-fetched thoughts and collects snails. Melinda, meanwhile, is a fun-loving wife, but she's also a bit of a master manipulator, knowing exactly how to push people's buttons, especially Vic.

Vic allows his affairs to avoid his wife's threatened divorce, spending most of his time channeling his inner Gone Girl as he watches from afar as Melinda has affairs with numerous different men. Only each of these men begins to disappear under increasingly suspicious circumstances. Is Vic responsible?

  What happens to Charlie?

Midway through the movie, Vic notices that Melinda is getting close to Charlie, her piano teacher. At the party, Vic is overcome with jealousy and becomes angry and resentful. It all fits together dramatically.

While everyone is sheltering from the rain, Vic drowns Charlie in the pool, but when the police arrive, he pretends to be ignorant. Melinda meanwhile believes that Vic is responsible for killing her. However, Vic is not charged with murder, the blow to Charlie's head was actually caused by Don hitting Charlie on the head.

 Anyone else suspect Vic?

After this incident - and one involving a guy named Joel Dash, who had previously bragged about killing a guy who approached Vic's wife - Don begins to have some doubts about Affleck's brooding character.

With Melinda's help, Don hires a PI to investigate Vic's history. Only Vic soon learns that his wife is also involved. Vic has Don back at his house, embarrassing Don in front of his wife when he brings up the $743 he paid as part of this whole spree.

After Charlie's death and the PI gig, things escalate when Melinda gets closer to Tony Cameron, who is playing more mind games with Vic. During dinner at their house, Tony offers to cook them some of Vic's snails, but it doesn't go over too well given Vic's fascination and obsession with these molluscs.

The next day, Vic takes an unsuspecting Tony into the woods and hits him over the head with a rock. Tony staggers back, loses his footing, and tumbles down the ravine, hitting the ground with a thud of pain as blood seeps from the side of his head. Vic decides to cover things up and uses his belt to attach stones to Tony's body. I mean, he could have just left it and it would have been an accident, but here we go.

How does Melinda learn the truth about Vic?

In the morning, Vic rides to pick up something Melinda left in the creek, and they are there for a morning picnic. In his absence, Melinda goes into the basement where she sees all the snails and accidentally steps on one.

Melinda also finds Anthony's wallet hidden in one of the boxes and realizes what her husband is doing.

Meanwhile, Vic begins fishing with a corpse, trying to hide it from view, but Don sees him there in the act of a crime, having previously followed him himself. Don finds Melinda's red scarf, but when Tony's hand surfaces, he realizes that Vic has killed him and returns to his car, desperate to escape.

Vic follows on his bike, trying to chase down Don as he speeds down the dirt road... and he catches up to him. Vic takes a short cut, jumps in front of Don's car, and falls over the steering wheel. Don runs to miss it and veers off the road into the water below. Of course, Vic goes home again.

  How does Deep Water end?

The film's final shot returns to the beginning as Melinda tells Vic that she "saw Tony," referring to the wallet she found earlier in the basement. Melinda burns Tony's ID, accepting Vic's behavior because he's the only one left with her crazy mind games and manipulations.

By the end of the film, we see that Melinda fully accepts Vic's deadly behavior while also coming to terms with her own insecurities and flaws. Melinda has turned it into a twisted form of love, which is why she gets so hot and cold with Vic at various points in the film.

We don't see Don's fate here, but it's safe to assume he's dead.

  Is there a post-credits sequence?

There's a post-credits sequence, but Trixie sings along in her car. A strangely sweet ending to 0, otherwise a rather dark and rather disappointing ending to this film.
